Big BMX Air with Dakota Roche
It’s not something you forget, of course.
However, BMX game-changer Dakota Roche can clearly remember the first time he caught air. Surprisingly, it wasn’t on a bike, but rather on a skateboard at…gasp…four-years-old.
“We had a sidewalk bump in our front yard that was right between two driveways,” he recalls. “It was like a naturally perfect little box jump. When I first got into riding at three, I just rode it. A year later, I was catching air on it. It was the craziest and best feeling. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it!”
Barely in kindergarten and Roche had already begun making strides towards his future as one of the leading figures in BMX.
Born and raised in the extreme sports haven of Huntington Beach, CA, he eventually transitioned to BMX. Developing his skills (and riding any wall and catching as much air as possible along the way), he’s risen through the ranks to become something of a celebrated modern legend. Among countless accolades, he’s garnered a total of three X Games medals for BMX Street and scored the NORA Cup for “Street Rider of the Year,” which he counts as his “biggest achievements and things [he] never imagined would happen.” Compound that with millions of views on his insane videos, he’s literally paved his road wherever he could, defying gravity at any and all turns to boot. Often, these types of bike heroics will be soundtracked by Metallica or Pink Floyd blaring through his headphones.
“It’s either being in the air or on a wall,” he grins. “Those are two things human beings shouldn’t be able to do. I’m always trying to do things that you’re not supposed to be doing! That hasn’t changed in over twenty years.”
He just joined forces with yet another group of disruptors, Opkix. Roche comes aboard as an influencer and an investor.
“I saw the potential the brand had, and I was like, ‘This is going to be something big’,” he explains. “It’s not often that we get to see something start from the ground up. When the opportunity to invest presented itself, I knew I had to. The right people are involved. It’s going in the right direction. I was in from the first moment.”
Stay tuned for a lot more from Dakota Roche and Opkix very soon.
